Location Spotlight: The Fort

Updated: Sep 16, 2024

Location, location, location! Having the right setting for a photoshoot is essential, and thankfully, there are so many to choose from. Today, I'd like to show you the unexpected charm of a former warehouse here in Columbus, Ohio that's been transformed into a creative space.

From Fire Engines to Creative Refuge

Originally a manufacturer of fire trucks and accessories in the late 1800s, the building is quieter these days but still busy. With multiple floors and walled areas too big to be called "rooms," it's now home to a number of creatives in various industries, including photography, furniture repair, and pottery. The largest spaces though, sit empty and open, with large paned windows and exposed beams. The natural light varies from step to step, and gives so much opportunity to experiment with direction and intensity. Having so many windows and so much space to work with lets you keep your subjects in that beautiful lighting with a variety of textures and backdrops.

Honoring History

Sporting some truly unique features, such as the original freight elevator and an industrial washroom, there's a lot to be used that would be difficult to replicated in a smaller, more traditional studio. The history and charm of the building is a creative's dream, inspiring and daring people to make something gritty, raw, and beautiful. If you don't mind the dust, locations like this one can make a photoshoot an incredibly dynamic experience!
